I love playing with puppies. Nothing beats holding and loving on a cute, fluffy little creature that loves to be held and petted! I especially like to visit Petland Aurora, because they can have up to 100 (or more!) different puppies for sale at any given time! This not only gives their customers a TON of puppy breeds to choose from, but it also gives me a great place to observe many different breeds of dogs in one setting. Today I watched a small breed dog, the Maltese. Maltese puppies are small, fluffy little dogs, and believe me, they are absolutely beautiful. I wanted to find out more about this breed than just how cute and fluffy they are, so I spoke with a Pet Counselor about them.
Maltese puppies are small dogs with a lot of energy. They are considered a toy breed, probably because adults weigh anywhere from 3 to 10 pounds. They love to play and are very active dogs. The good thing is that because they are so small, a small back yard or an apartment will give them enough room to play. They love to interact with people, and can sometimes have separation anxiety if their owners are gone for too long.
There are a couple of things to be aware of with this breed. First, the Maltese may nip at small children, so it is best to train the Maltese from a very young age or else make sure they are supervised around young children. They can also bark a lot. If you do not have the patience to train this little puppy, be prepared for your Maltese to possibly bark frequently. The good news? This breed is considered to be generally healthy. They have an average life span of 13 to 15 years.
Maltese dogs grow their hair down to the ground for dog shows. The coat is absolutely beautiful, white and flowing It does take consistent brushing to keep this coat looking beautiful and free of matting. Many families decide to give their Maltese what's known as a puppy cut---keeping the dog shaved to only 1-2". This makes this small breed dog more suited for family play. However, whichever way you choose to grow the Maltese's hair, grooming time is wonderful bonding time between you and the dog.
I really enjoyed my time playing with the Maltese puppy. I was glad to have a Pet Counselor who knew all about Malteses help me to discover this breed of dog. I love the fact that this breed is very soft and fluffy, loyal, and good with people. I would recommend this breed to anyone with a family and small living space. When you are ready to add a new puppy to your family, I would highly recommend that you go to Petland Aurora to find one.
